The mission of the Education Committee is to work with schools and local businesses to enhance and shape the educational opportunities in the community.

Our Commitment:
As a chamber, we recognize the importance of an educated workforce and the benefit it brings to our members and students who are the future employees of the local business community. We are fortunate to have one of the strongest school systems in the state.


The 2015 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award was presented to Ms. Catherine Tanguis.

Ms.Tanguis has a Masters of Arts in Teaching English.  She received the 2013 Yale Educator Award. Slidell High School Teacher of the Year, Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, Elks Teacher of the Year and PTA Educator of Distinction.  Ms. Tanguis teaches Gifted English III and IV, Advanced Composition I and Advanced Composition II at Northshore High School. She is Founder and Sponsor of Northshore High School Ambassadors which is an organization that fosters student leadership through service projects, mentoring freshmen students and leadership training.  She is founder and Sponsor of Northshore High School Creative Writing Club and also Prism Art and Literary Magazine.  In addition to her many accomplishments in teaching, Ms. Tanguis is also a Slidell Women’s Civic Club member and the website designer and webmaster of the Civic Clubs website as well as the Website Designer and Webmaster for Family Promise.  She is the Co-Director of Family Promise of St. Tammany, St. Margaret Mary Parish as well as a member of CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children in the community.”

Each year, the Chamber is honored to present local high school students with $1,000 scholarships to assist them with their college expenses.  

2015 Recipients were:

Callee Fogg – Pearl River High School

Callee plans to attend Nicholls State University in order to receive a degree in nursing.  She plans on going for a Masters Degree and eventually hopes to specialize in neonatal nursing.  Callee was Louisiana Girl’s State Citizen in 2014, Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge essay winner, 2015 Ms. Pearl River High School.  Callee is also a National Society of High School Scholars Member and she was Pearl River High School newspaper liaison for the 2013-14 school year.
Rebecca Kernahan – Northshore High School
Rebecca plans to attend LSU in the fall where she will major in Biological Sciences.  She also plans to attend LSU Dental School and ultimately own her own dental practice.  She also has a strong desire to work with other dentists in programs like Global Dental Relief and a Reason to Smile.  Rebecca has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years; she is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, a class representative on the student council since 2011.  Rebecca also attended Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Program.  She was all A Honor Roll for the past 3 years and also lettered in Northshore Varsity Soccer and played on Slidell Division One Travel Soccer Team.
Victoria Stevens – Northshore High School
Victoria plans on attending LSU where she will major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in business.  Victoria was National Honor Society Secretary, member of the Spanish National Honor Society, student council treasurer her senior year, vice president her junior year and class representative as a sophomore.  She was a Beta Club members, student ambassador, High School Varsity Soccer Team as well as receiving a Panther Achievement award in both her freshman and sophomore years.
Michael Martinez, Jr. – Slidell High School
Michael will be attending either LSU or Southeastern in the fall where he will pursue an Electrical Engineering Degree.  Michael played on Slidell High School’s Baseball team for 3 years, basketball for one year.  He has received the Tiger Achievement Award, Student of the Month, High Five Award, 3 year Mathlete, Honor roll Student, perfect attendance, Mathematics League Certificate of Merit in the Ala-LA-Miss Math Contest.  He also received the Presidential Physical Fitness Award and ranked in the 99th percentile in the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test.
Hannah Tyler Tonry – Slidell High School
Hannah will be attending LSU where she will major in biology.  She will then attend LSU Medical School and ultimately become a cardiothoracic surgeon.  Hannah was student of the month during each of her high school years, she received the Shining Star Award and Most Likely to Succeed on Varsity Cheerleading.  She was a member of the Saga Ball court in 2015.  She was a member of the Interact Club for 4 years, Beta Club for 3, Fellowship of Christian Athletes for 4.  She was a Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheerleader, Vice President of the National Honor Society, Student Council Vice-President and also served on her prom committee.
